Need a brief understanding of what happens when a post is being published

Hi guys~

I’m not much of a coder but I do have some knowledge in Theme Development.. With that said, I need to understand what actually happens when someone (admin, editor and people with the proper access level) publish a post/page.

I mean like, what sort of file does wordpress call to have the post’s contents be inserted into the Database together with the Category that’s been selected.. I mean, which php function does wordpress use to do this?

I know it updates the wp_posts table in the Database but, I’m not sure exactly what php files has been used which contains the php function to do all this?
