I installed Yoast SEO plugin this morning and as soon as I activated it I could no longer access my dashboard. I can login but after doing so, once again, I can’t access my dashboard. I know the plugin is currently activated and I need to somehow get into the dashboard to deactivate it.
I’ve used this plugin on several of my other sites with no issues. I could use some advice on how to get into the dashboard to deactivate this plugin.
Thanks,
Arcinstall-

Hi Arcinstall,
I think in this situation, it may be best to manually remove the plugin. This can be done using FTP, or using the File Manager on your host.
It is very likely that the plugin will be in the following location on your server (If your website is installed on the root directory of your server)
/public_html/(yourwebsitehere).com/wp-content/plugins/(yoast plugin will be in here)
Once you have the plugin removed, you should be able to access your Dashboard again. Once you can access your Dashboard, if you would like to still have Yoast in there, I would suggest installing the previous version that was working.
To find older versions of this plugin, you can find them down at the very bottom of the following page:
https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wordpress-seo/advanced/
I hope this helps you get your site back up. Good luck.
@arcinstall please follow the guide suggested by @k00kaine, as that is the best way to uninstall a plugin when you don’t have access to your dashboard. Yoast SEO will be in the
/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-seo
directory@matthias88 Are there any JavasSript errors in the browser’s console? You can check by following this guide.
If there are any errors, We recommend performing a conflict check to determine if a different plugin is causing those issues. Please inform us of the results.
Thanks everyone for you comments. I’ll share what we did to resolve to problem in the hopes that it may help someone else.
I went to my File Manager and to the plugin folder several times and was unable to find the Yoast SEO plugin eventhough I knew that it had been installed and activated. I finally contacted VPS support with my hosting company and we both concluded that neither of us could find the plugin within the File Manager.
After exhausting all avenues, we finally went into the wp-content folder and re-named the “plugins” folder to “plugins1”. Upon doing this, I was then able to then access my website dashboard and deactivate then delete the Yoast SEO plugin. After doing so, we went back and re-named the “plugins1” folder to “plugins” again. I cleared the cache (history) and was was able to access my website dashboard normally again. I should note that I did have to re-activate all of my plugins again.
Marius, we did search the “wordpress seo” folder along with many others but couldn’t find the Yoast SEO plugin. The support rep as well as myself could not figure out why we couldn’t find the plugin.
I need to make the point that I’ve used and continue to use the Yoast SEO plugin on several of my other websites and find it to be a very good plugin. I assume the reason I had a problem with it this time was because the newer version of Yoast SEO is not compatible with the older theme version that I’m currently using with this particuler website.
Once again, Thank you everyone for your suggestions.
@matthias88 It appears that your screenshot shows that the Yoast SEO meta box is partially loaded.
Does the issue resolve if you clear your cache and cookies? Does the issue resolve if you use a different browser such as Chrome or FireFox? If you have any browser plugins/extensions, does disabling them resolve the issue?
If the issue persists, we ask you to do a conflict check by following the steps here — https://kb.yoast.com/kb/how-to-check-for-plugin-conflicts
@arcinstall Thank you for sharing that information. It’s possible that you were unable to locate the folder if the folder was named anything else or there was something amiss with the installation or it could have been a conflict with another plugin or theme. In any usual case, you should be able to find the plugin in the folder wordpress-seo under the wp-content/plugins directory.
@mikes41720
