Receive the following after successfully updating the plugin via WordPress dashboard and then selecting the ‘Updates’ section in the plugin where I attempted to conduct the requested database updates. It started saying 1 of 11 updates to complete but it never progressed beyond 0%. Now I get the error “Database Update – An unexpected issue occurred during the database update which caused it to stop automatically. Please contact support for assistance.” message when using the plugin and it reports 1 of 0 updates conducted.

As far as I can tell, the plugin still seems to work, though I can’t fully test it without donating to myself.

What might I have done wrong? Thanks

    Hi there,

Here’s the most common reasons why that might happen:

    1) Database caching — either at the server level or via a plugin. Either way, disable it everywhere you can just for the purpose of the update.

    2) Other types of caching that impact the backend website.

    3) Security plugins or sever-side security that prevents the ability to add new database tables.

Review those and let me know how it goes.

Thanks for getting back to me.

I tried deactivating Wordfence, as I realise that has quite aggressive protection mechanisms. Retried the database update but same issue as before.

I searched for cache related plugins and I don’t appear to have any installed as far as I can see. Its no problem though. I was thinking of simplifying my donation system anyway. Thanks for your time.

I was trying to work around what seemed to be a WP_Cron related issue and now I’m faced with this issue as well. :-/

Hi @tnolte did you review my comment above regarding Database caching and security issues? What’s the status of your site regarding those items?

@webdevmattcrom I basically don’t have any caching. At least the SiteGround caching wasn’t working right because it doesn’t support multi-site instances. I’ll have to double-check that something isn’t still turned on somehow. As for security plugins the only one I use is a login attempt limiter one which doesn’t do any sort of database protection.

Hey @tnolte, please upgrade SG Optimizer to 4.0.1. We’ve introduced full Multisite support in 4.0 ??

@tnolte — in my experience, you need to login to SD cpanel and disable the memcache there in order to run our updates. Definitely update the SD Optimizer plugin as Hristo suggests, but I’d recommend disabling it in cpanel just for the update process. Here’s how I’d recommend it goes:

    1) Go to Give Updates and Pause the update process
    2) Disable memcache in cpanel and the plugin — just to be 100% certain
    3) Restart the Give updates
    4) once you confirm it’s all done, enable memcache again.

    Thanks!

Thanks for responding @webdevmattcrom unfortunately I seem to be lost on steps 1 & 3. No where can I find navigation to “Give Updates” which I would assume is where I need to go for both pausing and restarting updates. I tried tracing it down by looking at the GitHub report and trying every combination of tab/page/section attributes I could think of with no use. I did try /wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=give_forms&page=give-updates and got an access denied from a normal user and a blank page from the Super User so I’m not sure if this is some sort of problem with Give not really working on multisite instances perhaps.

@hristo-sg thanks for the heads up on the update. I’ll give it a try. I’m still seeing problems in CPanel where it is listing that the SG Optimizer is off on all my multisite instances and if I try to turn them on they all just say I need to download & install the plugin. I can’t remove the application entries either. I will get a support ticket opened for that issue.

@webdevmattcrom so it looks like another culprit was Cloudflare being turned on, which I found out from a SiteGround tech also affects being able to turn on their optimization plugin. Using a screenshot I found in the GitHub Issues I was able to finally figure out the URL to manually get to the Updates page. It does look like the database upgrade was able to finish. It seems like the Updates menu item disappears ones some update process has started, and even though it failed finishing at that point the plugin thought updates were done and would no longer show the menu. Anyways, I think it’s all good now. Thanks for the help. @hristo-sg

@tnolte — thanks for the additional info. Glad you were able to find the final issue and that you’re now upgraded correctly.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

I have been having the same issue with this Database Update – An unexpected issue occurred during the database update which caused it to stop automatically. Please contact support for assistance.

I turned off all the plugins and re-installed the newest version of wp. But still no success.

I contacted inmotion and they told me this:

“In regards to the “Database Update – An unexpected issue occurred during the database update which caused it to stop automatically. Please contact support for assistance.”
It is very unclear where this error is actually coming from. Do you know what plugin is triggering this message?
Everything in regards to the database is correct on our side.”

Any ideas on what else it could be?

    Thank you

    HI Dan (@cosmiccats),

I’d recommend telling InMotion hosting the following:

I’m updating the GiveWP plugin with their built-in upgrade tool. This tool creates some new database tables that the plugin needs. Is it possible that InMotion prevents writing new tables, or that there’s database caching that might prevent the plugin update from working properly?

Let me know what they say about that. Thanks!

I am having this issue when I try to update Give updates: An unexpected issue occurred during the database update which caused it to stop automatically. Please contact support for assistance.

    Please any help?
