My client has endured a number of out of state customers who thought they could get over on the shipping by choosing Local Pickup. Local Pickup means in the immediate area only, which is not confusing.

Tax is correctly charged on out of state purchases, including if a customer chooses Local Pickup, because it is based on the ZIP Code. If the shipping is being selected honestly by a customer, the Local Pickup using the states ZIP Code will not incur any tax. This is the second dilemma, tax on Local Pickup for out of state purchase. A refund has to be issued on the tax, but then a fee be charged for the shipping. Client is justified in being unhappy with WooCommerce. Requires a phone call to the customer to correct and exposes them trying to cheat the shipping. Not always a good conversation.

The problem is WooCommerce fails to include a check script in the shopping cart to not allow a person to choose Local Pickup if they are out of state. There should be! How could such an oversight exist for so long? I have read other users are conflicted by this problem too, for a few years, without remedy.

WooCommerce Local Pickup Plus does not address of resolve this problem, nor any other plugin as of current.

  • Hi there,

The shipping methods offered to your customers should only go to those applicable to the zone that it matches to. In this screenshot: https://d.pr/free/i/CbewID from the documentation you can see how within the state is considered local and outside of the state is considered domestic.

I would suggest setting up your zones similar to ensure your customers have the correct options, if you continue to have issues please let us know!

Uh… You definitely didn’t read or digest my support issue properly. Your suggestion is seriously far off the mark. Seems to be the standard for Automattic support.

A skilled Automattic developer needs to carefully read the detailed outline, meditate on it, test the scenario described and only then will it make sense. A non-technical non-developer response will never suffice.

Read slowly until it sinks in. WooCommerce does NOT include PHP code which should be included in the shopping cart process that will NOT allow a person to choose “Local Pickup” if they are out of state. If a customer zip code is in New York, that person should not be able to choose “Local Pickup” from a physical store located in Florida! This happens too much. This is a major oversight in the development of the “Local Pickup” selection. Please read it again! Can’t explain it any clearer.

This is not a unique problem. A quick search reveals other users are conflicted by this problem too, for a number of years, without remedy. Setting up different shipping zones is NOT the solution. Absolutely not. Far off the mark from the required solution. Thanks for trying to harder.

Respectfully, there is no reason to be so aggressive on a reply in a free forum support environment.

Secondly, @nixiack8’s reply is correct. If you use shipping zones correctly, then people from far away won’t be able to even see the local pickup method because their address will put them in a different shipping zone with different shipping rates.

And lastly, local pickup applies taxes based on the store’s base address. If this is not the behavior you want, then you can use the Free Shipping method and rename it.

I recommend reading up on shipping zones and shipping rates:

Thanks @icaleb, you are the first Automattic Happiness Engineer that explained something clearly, where we had already read all the supplied links before posting the trouble ticket. Instead of enduring the typical denial runaround and time wasting responses we historically suffer from Automattic engineers, you addressed the situation exceptionally clear. You should be promoted to training the other engineers! Problem solved! Thanks.
