Domain/Theme Question

    This question isn’t specifically about the theme, but I’ve searched quite a bit and thought someone might be able to give me a quick answer here.

    Our WordPress site is currently cleanenergycareer.com, but we’re going to transfer this domain to a different platform. We want to keep all of our WordPress content that we’ve created using your OceanWP theme. (We want to keep this content on WordPress – not asking about transferring the content to a new platform)

    My question is, if we move cleanenergycareer.com without having another purchased domain to replace it with, will the content remain in tact on WordPress? I realize this content may be unpublished, but that’s okay – the main issue is keeping the content.

    This is the only time I’ve used WordPress so I’ve never gone through this process and just a bit nervous about losing the work I’ve put into the site. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

    Hello, if you just want to change your domain name, you just need to add your new DNS for the new domain (ask your web host how to do, maybe he can do it for you), but if you want to change server, you will need to migrate it and it is a little more complicated.

    Thanks for the response.

    If I don’t have another domain name yet, can I move my current domain and still keep the WordPress content in tact? Or do I need to go ahead and get the other domain to keep all of my created content?

    Hi, a domain is not a server, if you just change domain name, you will just need to redirect it to your server by editing the DNS, but when you don’t know how to do it is quite complicated, I recommend you to see this with your host, they usually help you to do everything for free.

    The existing website would stay intact providing the files and database remain in place, but it wouldn’t work at all because of taking away the domain it’s all connected to.

    It’s best to migrate it to another domain using a plugin such as “Duplicator” or “Backup Buddy”. This video is slightly out of date but is still relevant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkjAxA48SA8

    Hi @ianonmac, if the server doesn’t change, there is no need to migrate anything, if it is just the domain name, you just need to redirect your server to it.

    Thanks for the help guys. I understand the domain isn’t a server, but just wanted to make sure everything would stay in place on WordPress even without a domain. If the content remains, but the site is unusable until a domain is attached then that is fine.
