I am getting this error ‘Admin Users Created Outside of WordPress’ for every subscriber account on all my sites. When I revoke access, the wp_capabilities record in wp_user_meta is deleted for the user creating other issues.

Do these accounts really have admin capabilities? From the db and the admin area, it does not look like it.

And these accounts have been on the site for years, they are not new.

  • I am getting the same thing on one of my sites. This is running woocommerce which might means every order creates a new user. My client is concerned (as am I). I didn’t realize deleting was also possibly destroying user data.

Thank you for bringing this up. Do either of you use Installatron to update your sites?

    srpatterson and iterentius,
I’d like to check and see if I can find anything in common between your sites that could explain this. Can you please send a diagnostics report from Wordfence (Tools > Diagnostics and use the small form at the top of the page) to [email protected]? Please mention your respective usernames (srpatterson or iterentius) when sending it in so I know where the report is coming from.

    Thanks in advance!

    @wfbrad, No, I don’t use this plugin.

@wfasa, So, I’m using the free version on this site. When I got to the place you mention the only form is either for premium subscription or for searching the knowledge base.

Woocommerce spits out a nice summary of things and I can email that to the address provided if it helps. I couldn’t find this within Wordfence.

I may assume some conflict with woocommerce considering this is the only thing creating or updating users on my site.

    Hi iterentius,

Click this button at the top of the Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics page to display the form

I don’t think it’s necessarily WooCommerce. I suspect it could be a plugin that is modifying the WP Users Query so that it returns all WordPress users regardless of what you tell it to return.

I will need to compare diagnostics to make sure though. Please send to [email protected] if you can and include your username iterentius.

    Thanks in advance!

    I just sent, thanks!

    Hi iterentius,
Thanks for that. I have checked your diagnostics. Unfortunately you do not have any plugins or themes in common with the other users I have seen reporting this issue in the past few days so in your case I’m less sure what the issue may be.

I do agree that one of the WooCommerce plugins could be a likely culprit since they hook in to the user creation flow. Is there any chance you can test on a development version of the site to deactivate the WooCommerce addons and see if you can identify one that may be causing it?

I have sent the diagnostics. I do not have woocommerce on the sites. Luckily it did not affect all the sites, only about 6 of them.

    Hi srpatterson!
You have the same plugin we’ve seen with other sites (Pretty Links). It looks like you’ve updated it to the latest version. Two customers have confirmed that updating Pretty Links fixed their problem. Let me know if it’s fixed for you as well!

    Thanks!
