Yes. Works fine and I use it on a Apache2 Linux server. I used a self signed SSL cert via an openssl command.

But you’ll need to be able to set up SSL on your web server first, make sure that’s working, and THEN setup WordPress to use it.

    I am getting the error:

    Secure Connection Failed

An error occurred during a connection to https://www.etdsonline.com.

SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length.

    (Error code: ssl_error_rx_record_too_long)
The page you are trying to view can not be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.

    * Please contact the web site owners to inform them of this problem.

This URL https://www.etdsonline.com/readme.html gets the same error page.

That’s not too bad really. Your server does not have SSL setup correctly. You are running Apache 1.3.41, are you using mod_ssl? Most likely you have not properly generated the private/public key pair.

Generating the key and installing it can be a hassle. Take a look at this page https://slacksite.com/apache/certificate.php it might help you get it installed correctly.
