So I left blogging many years ago and I’ve used to keep my blog archives online but a couple of years ago (two and a half or maybe three years have passed since I left it offline) I quit my hosting service subscription and left it offline until I had time to look for another one and keep the archives online again. The time has arrived and I’ve decide to try some free hosting services before paying for one again, since my blog archives won’t have that much traffic. So I’m trying to get it online again, but I can’t login to WordPress dashboard, it simply doesn’t accept my credentials. I’ve tried changing the password through the login page, I’ve tried changing it through phpMyAdmin, but WordPress still refuses to accept both trials. Besides, when I access my blog homepage, it shows a blank, standard WordPress recently-installed blog page, as if it was a new installation. I simply can’t see any of my archive posts, categories, etc. It is showing it as if it was really a new blog – which means that is must be completely ignoring my database backup that I’ve uploaded to this hosting service. Actually, this is the second free hosting service I’ve tried. In the first one I could login to the Dashboard using new credentials given on the WordPress Softaculous automated installation process, but the dashboard also shown as if it was a new installation, ignoring my database backup I’ve had uploaded and had configured WP to use (through wp-config.php).
Well, I don’t know what to do at all. Could it be some kind of database version incompatibility, since my WordPress and mysql backups are too are old, because I’ve left it offline for almost three years, and now both WordPress and mysql are some versions ahead? Or could I be doing something wrong? I’m thinking about paying for at least a month of a hosting service to get their support staff to help my solve this and try to get it running again. In this case, should I pay for a WordPress specific hosting plan or a standard web hosting plan would be better to deal with the mysql database stuff, since that could be the problem?

Thanks, guys. I would appreciate any help or suggestions.

What is the table prefix when you look directly in your database via phpmyadmin? Does it match the prefix you set in wp-config.php?

Thanks, Steve! Your reply has helped me slowly solve all my problems. You were right about the table prefix – I set it to “wp”, but I forgot the to put “_” at the end of it on wp-config.php, so I changed and the frontpage started to show, but any link I’ve clicked sent me to a 404 page. Suddenly it came to my mind that I’ve faced the same problem before in my blogging life, and then I went to my WP forum posts and found the answer: there was no .htaccess file. I’ve got the one from my backups and uploaded to both the “www” folder and my “seteventos.com” (my blog) folder on the hosting service and now everything works when navigating on my blog archives….except that I still couldn’t reach the Dashboard. I entered my credentials on my WordPress login page and it simply kept reloading to a completely blank page. Oh, yeah, I haven’t blogged for many years! And then, again, it came to my mind that plugins can generate lots of problems, specially caching plugins. So I’ve done some thinkering on the File Manager of the hosting service and…SHAZAM! I finally can access my Dashboard!

Thanks again for your help Steve! It helped me a lot to slowly fix everything! The WordPress community still rocks!
