Hi There… Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere..I have been reading reports on various forums about possible issues where Yoast is now allowing google to index images separately and they then in turn are appearing in the SERPS causing 100’s of pages of thin unwanted content. This has naturally caused many site owners to see their sites dropped down the rankings.

I am using Yoast version 7.5.1. Can anybody from the Yoast team tell me what option for attachment URLS is the correct one to avoid this.

Currently my sites are set to the default YES ( ‘redirect from attachment URL to the attachment itself’) Now when i look at my sitemaps in Google search console, both the posts and images are listed as having been indexed.

I have not yet seen any image urls in the search results yet, but have seen a recent drop in traffic, I am not sure if this issue with images is causing the problem… Confirmation as to what the correct setting should be will be appreciated.

If you enable the media (attachment) redirects, none of the media (attachment) pages will appear in the search results and all the media (attachment) pages will redirect to the media files.

On the other hand, when enabling the media redirects, this stops search engines to show the media (attachment) pages in the search results but not the actual media files. This means the media files will still appear in the media search results but not the attachment pages.
