• Is there a way to create a duplicate version of my live WP site? I’m going to do some heavy theme work and would like a “beta” site to experiment on, without the live site being affected.

I know about the XAMPP method but would rather this be a remote, not local, beta version. I checked out Theme Test Drive but it requires you to point to a remote .zip file, which would be kind of inefficient for my needs.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Would like to follow your thread. Need to learn about Beta Sites

Well copy all files to test site, copy database files and import them into an empty database at the other location, change the config file to connect to the new database and update links in database tables (or do it before tables export in admin) and update permalinks.

    Rhand,

Would it better to create a subdomain such as beta.mysite.com or create a sub-folder in my directory such as mysite.com/beta ? I’ll also be password protecting my beta site — is it better to do this using a subdomain or a sub-directory? Thanks!
