Lazy Load Images Ruining Homepage Feature Images

    I was told by our theme developers (Organic Themes) that this is an issue the Jetpack team needs to fix, not them (not sure if this is true or not).

    Here is my original post to them:

    I recently enabled jetpack’s “Lazy load images” feature to help speed up my site. However, I noticed after I did this, on the homepage, all of the feature images (3 feature pages in the middle, feature image for page excerpt in lower left) convert to square dimensions, leaving a “block” of black color filling the empty space.

    From what I can tell, it also seems to have changed the dimensions of single post feature images by a few pixels in height.

    Not sure why this is or how to fix it? I’d like to use the “lazy load” feature to help speed the site up.

    Thanks for getting in touch, and sorry to hear about the trouble you’re having. I’ll certainly try to get things sorted for you.

    First, Can you tell me which browser and version number you are running in that screen shot?

    I’ve had a look at the site, and those featured images appear as they should, but I am guessing you’ve disabled the lazy load at the moment?

    Once you turn the lazy load back on, go ahead and check the site in a different browser to see if it appears the same as the screen shot. If it does, follow these steps.

    1. disable every plugin on the site
    2. sign out of your WordPress.com account
    3. Flush your browser cache
    4. Sign back in to WordPress.com
    5. Re install the Jetpack plugin – check site
    6. Add one plugin at a time to see if any of those are running interference, checking the site with each re installation.

    Hi, @lizkarkoski,

    Thank you for the response. Unfortunately, as this is a live site and one that accepts donations dependent on certain plugins, it is not possible to shut down the entire site, deactivate all the plugins (losing all our custom settings), changing the themes, and then testing as you say.

    Based on my searches here in the forum, it seems the lazy load feature has multiple people with issues complaining, and it really should be on the jetpack developers to resolve these issues.

    What are the other options?

    I will file a report for our developers to have a look. Afterwards, I’ll post the link here so you can follow along as well.

    Right now I am going to try and replicate your report on a test site.

    I know you are pretty tied to using the NonProfit theme by Organic given the nature of the site. Trying to use a default theme, like twenty-seventeen, would enable us to see if it is a theme issue or if we need to look at something else.
