I have products that have certain compatibilities. It’s a motor. Some motors only work with certain voltages and horsepower combinations. I have voltage and horse power as separate attributes so that the user can search those in two steps. How can I link attributes without using variations? I don’t want to use variations because the product has a single SKU and price for all attributes.

An example: I have a motor that works a combinations of (3HP and 460 Volt) or (2HP and 220 Volt). If I add both voltages and both horsepowers to the attributes this product would show up for a 3HP 220 Volt combination which should not be valid.

Am I using attributes wrong and there is another way to tackle this?

@breeves You are using attributes correctly, and variations are best route to take. If each variation doesn’t have its own SKU, it’s possible to set the SKU at the parent level under the Inventory tab:

As for the prices all being the same, you can set the prices in bulk with this option:

If you do not set the specific variations, then customers will be able to choose any combination, which as you said, doesn’t work.

    Ok thank you.

I set this up as a variable product doing just that and one problem I do have with this is when using layered navigation and selecting two attributes that are not compatible (ie there is no variation with that combo) the product still shows up in the list. It has both attributes but no variation with that combo.

    Hi @breeves,

I’m not sure that’s how the Filter Products by Attribute Widget will work. Can you send a screenshot of your widget settings? I assume you are using multiple widgets to show each possible attribute? Something like this in my case where there are sizes and button attributes.

If you use the AND option will only show products that match the chosen options, but I’m not certain that that works across two or more uses of the widget.

Yeah I’m using it just as your screenshots show, using the AND query type and two filter widgets. I’m guessing that the attribute filter only looks at available attributes on the product and not at variation combinations if it’s a variable product. Is that the case?

Yes, that is what happens. It’s looking at the attributes on the product, not the variations available.

We haven’t heard back from you in a while, so I’m going to mark this as resolved – if you have any further questions, you can start a new thread.
