5 Minute Install

  • Hi, I have successfully completed steps 1-4 of the 5 minute installation, but I’m not 100% clear about step 5:
    “5) Run the installation file. Relative to where you uploaded the files, ita€?ll be in wp-admin/install.php.”
    How do I run the installation file exactly? Do I run it via the browser, because when I go to the site in question I get a page saying “It doesn’t look like you’ve installed WP yet. Try running install.php.” with a link to do so. Do I take it that I should click on this link and follow through?
    BTW my site URL (www.site.com) is forwarded to https://www.site.com/folder so should I type the former or the latter into my browser to install (if this is how I’m supposed to do the install that is)?

    Thanks btvillarian – it worked!
    My only question is this – in step 2 it asked me to enter the site url. In my case the url for my site is https://www.mydomain.tv which is being forwarded to https://www.different-domain.com/mydomain. I entered https://www.mydomain.tv. Did I do the right thing?

    Yeesh, um…I’m not sure. What’s the actual URL, for cryin out loud? *LoL* =) I guess it depends whether visitors use the forwarder domain only, or if they could use either. Hopefully what WP detected was fine. Is it up? If it is, then yeah, you did the right thing. ??
    By the way, macmanx posted a non-working example link to show you where the install.php should be.

    I’ve a similar problem, so this helps but I’m still having trouble getting the install.php to work. It keeps reporting
    Are you sure you have the correct user/password?
    Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
    Are you sure that the database server is running?
    1. I have the file set as https://www.mydomain/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php – is this correct? Should it be something else?
    2. Do I have to set up the database name prior to this process? How would I do that?
    3. The wp-config.php also asks for mysql user name and password. Is this set up separately or created during the installation? Is this information my server access user name and password or something different?
    4. Could the 5 minute install include these specifics to help us get going 50 minutes faster? hee hee…<wg>

    1. Probably correct, assuming your blog is installed in a directory called “wordpress”. Otherwise change it to the name of your directory.
    2. Yes, more exactly you have to set up the database (not only its name) prior to the installation.
    3. When you have your database you’ll also have the username and the pw for it. No, the server access username and pw is NOT the same!

    Question: do you have access to a database on the server where your site is hosted? If you don’t know, you should ask your host. Or, if you have CPanel, just post back, we will try to help you.

    It took some doing to figure out the vdeck control panel for my server since they aren’t really helpful with specific help, but I finally got the database set up and the username and password figured out.
