• Could would a GDPR security plugin cause me to lose all my media images? Every image on my site disappeared, my site banner is gone and all my media library is gone. The only thing I’ve done is add a gdpr plugin. I’m at a loss of what to do. I did send in a support ticket but probably won’t hear back for a couple of days. I’m so sick over this. I did delete the plugin but nothing has come back.

It depends on the plugin. Where did you get it? From the WordPress plugin repository?

It’s possible that something else happened at the same time you added the plugin, which is why deleting it hasn’t done anything.

Have you checked your server error logs? Have you tried enabling WP_DEBUG?

Do you have a backup of your website?

I’ve checked; you’re site doesn’t appear to be infected with malware: https://sitecheck.sucuri.net/results/www.donnaharris.co/

FWIW, if you’re not doing business with EU residents, you don’t need to worry about GDPR.

thank you for getting back to me. It was WPFreshstart 5 plugin. I had to purchase it. I had no issues before installing it. I will try the WP-DEBUG and see what happens.

I’m about to just give up. This is so exhausting with so many problems. Thank you.

kjodle, could it be a hosting issue?

You installed some kind of weird plugin that looks like a mix of theme editor and something akin to a promotion or SEO tool with a promise of GDPR compliance.

If it was me I’d just kill that plugin and write off the expense then restore from a good backup from before you installed that thing. I think it clobbered all your media files or did something to the directory structure of your uploads directory.

That should get you going pretty easily.

Once you’re back up you might create a privacy policy with something like this https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/auto-terms-of-service-and-privacy-policy/ and then use something like Jetpack’s GDPR to add GDPR notification to your privacy policy.

You might not even need to worry with GDPR but you’d need to consult with legal guidance in your area.

TY JNashHawkins. I just purchased that plugin so I can and will get a refund. I did do a backup just the other day so now I will have to learn how to restore from that backup. Grrrr the woes of internet marketing. Could the issue be connected to my hosting?

I guess it could be your host’s fault somehow but that plugin is much more suspect to me since you installed it and things quit working. And that plugin seems to be more for creating new websites… nothing I read there seemed to even mention adding anything related to GDPR to an existing site.

Restoring from the backup should be easy enough. If you are familiar with the file system you could even try restoring just the media files first. I’m wondering if the plugin clobbered anything else there though.

TY JNashHawkins, I will check all that out.
