    Hello everybody!

I am trying to edit the RSS feed of my WordPress site, specifically the “<description>” tag. After some research, I realized that this RSS tag is actually the post excerpt.

I am aware you can add a custom excerpt for each post by enabling the Excerpt box from the Screen Display option. However, I would have to do this for every individual post and I cannot set a “Read More” link.

The default excerpt for each post has the first 55 words and a link that directs to the post in the following format: “Continue Reading Article-Name”

I want my excerpts to include the first 55 words (so no change), but the link that directs to the post should be in the following format: “Read More”

In short, I want to change the link at the end of the excerpt from “Continue Reading Article-Name” to “Read More”

It would be best if this can be done without touching the php code. If that is not possible, I will be careful if touching the php code is necessary.

P.S. I would link the site, but it is set to private access at the moment

  • The RSS feed is generated, so if you want to change it you need to use a plugin.

What plugin could I use? I tried using Custom Simple Rss, but it could not accomplish this.

Also, I was able to change the RSS feed by utilizing a custom excerpt made by enabling excerpt from the Screen Display option. But I ran into the two issues described in my original post.

You’ll just have to search for RSS plugins and try things. If you do, be aware that the feed is not regenerated every time you look at it. It is cached.

When you add a custom excerpt, you are not just changing the RSS feed. You are changing what shows on your site (wherever the excerpt is used). And the Screen display options only need to be set once per user. After that, the user meta value that the user wants to see it is stored so it shows correctly next time.

Thanks for pointing out that the excerpt would be modified on the site itself, I overlooked that.
