• Philosophical Review:

Stop complaining about the transition to paid features.

I too have used this plugin for years and availed myself of its free features and abused the author for free support over that time. As a result, I’m more than happy to pay for the new version if it continues to support the author and allows for faster development and better support. I pay for Gravity Forms for the same reason…it’s good, it’s supported, it updates. If paying for Theme My Login gets me the same three things, it’s money well spent.

tl;dr Not everything that starts free, stays free. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

    Technical Review:

The new version works basically the same as the old version with the caveat that it’s now subscription based for the advanced functionality. The only currently missing feature is the User Links which appeared on the Widget/via the User Panel shortcode but there is currently a function written in the documentation and I’m completely sure the author will bring this functionality back as well as add more new functionality soon. The plugin works as advertised and we use it on multiple client sites without issues.

Of special note and interest is the new Restrictions module which allows you to show/hide menu items from the menu editor and also lets you control partial or full page content display via shortcodes. This is a really good addition to TML’s functionality and worth a look.
