When you change slug question

Did you create a 301 redirect from website.com/shoes to website.com/shoes/la? Or did you just change the slug entirely?

No did not do a redirect. Just altered the slug to add la at the end.

Unfortunately, WordPress does not create these redirects automatically and it cannot be done using Yoast SEO either. The feature which automatically creates redirect from the old slug to the new one is part of Yoast SEO Premium.

Alternatively, you can manually create a 301 redirect as in this guide.

Nothing is happening. When you change the slug, the Old URL will lead to a “Page not found” message (404 HTTP status).

@drakewilson Yoast SEO won’t keep the old URL that is changed in the XML sitemap. The updated URL will also update in the XML sitemap.

@kevs23 the old slug should not remain in the sitemap. If you are still able to find after you have changed the slug of a post/page/taxonomy, it is possible that your XML sitemap is being cached.

If you are using any caching plugins/solutions, please make sure to exclude the sitemap from being cached.
