Hello, I’m helping a friend build their site with WP, but this is my first time with a project like this so let me know what other information I may need to help understanding.

Every time I make changes to the website using WP, update and hit the publish button, I am able to see those changes through the WP account, but those changes are not reflected on the actual site once I log off. If I delete all the pages and content, the site appears unchanged. If add new pages, change the menus, change the themes, change the content, none of these changes are added to the site. Some of my past changes did go through, like changing the background color and adding a second page, but I can’t tell you at what point that happen or how.

At one point, I deleted all the pages, added them again, adding a new Home page too, but I was not able to link the https://example.com address to it, WP would keep it at “https://example.com/home/”. If I tried adding a menu, I would get two “Home” links I could add to it, one would link to “https://example.com/home” and the other to “https://example.com”, but I have only one home page created.

If I click on the “visit site” or “view page” link for the home page, I’m taken to the https://example.com page, but none of the changes I make appear in it. I can’t see the WP toolbar either, so I can’t customize or edit the page there, I have to go back on my browser to get back to my WP account page. But if try “view page” with any of the other pages I add, I do get to those pages normally and the WP toolbar appears up at the top like normal. For example, if I go: pages > contact page > view page” I get the page I modified with all the changes. If I click on the link to the home page from the page there, I am actually taken to a version of the home page that has all the changes I made and I can modify and seems perfectly normal, but as soon as I log out and go to https://example.com, nothing has changed. I get the sense that I am being directed to a different “Home” page I can’t access or modify through my WP panel.

I have tried uninstalling all my plugins and themes and reinstalling the WP version, but none of this changes works. I don’t know what type of server the host is using, but I do know it’s a shared hosting plan, if that helps. I have also tried clearing my browser’s history and purging the cache on WP, setting my front page to a static page pointing to the home page i add. My permalinks are set to “https://example.com/pagetitle”. Nothing works.

Any suggestions? Any information I could provide that would be helpful?

  • Hello there,

    1. Disable caching plugins
    2. Purge cache from browser
    3. Have you altered caching yourself in any way?
    4. If you’re using any CDN like Cloudflare, enable dev mode and purge cache from their side
    5. Refresh page with Ctrl+ F5(or Cmd + R for Mac) which ignores cache
    6. If you’re making changes in CSS or JS, for example, make sure to take a look at
source code in dev panel – maybe your CSS selectors are just not superior or you’ve
got an error in other code.

    7. after you update the page, are you sure you are checking the actual page and not
just the preview version? The preview version just stuck to a specific change. Any
later changes will not show up.

If caching isn’t the problem, check these common mistakes with URLs and file names:

    1. Verify the URL – Make sure you’re entering the correct URL in your web browser.
Double-check the full path and file names.
    2. Verify the template – If you’re editing a template, make sure the post or page
you’re viewing in your browser is using the template you’re editing.
    3. Verify the file – If you are editing a file on your local computer and then
uploading the updated version, make sure you uploaded the correct file. Also, make
sure you’re not working with a file with a similar name or the same name in another
    folder.

If none of that helps, it’s your host.

Hello again, sorry for the delay work kept me busy.

After a little looking around WP, I found I have the following plugin:
    “Endurance Page Cache”
Which seems to be installed by the host provider, HostGator.
I disabled it, and I can make changes just fine now.

Thank you for your suggestions! If I have any other questions I’ll drop by again.
