Hello, I was wondering, does Gutenberg enhance the category editor so it functions more like the post editor? Currently the category editor doesn’t allow you to create very good Category pages.
    Thanks
    Clint

    Anyone?

I’m not 100% sure I understand your question. Gutenberg is replacing the classic editor, the editor for posts and pages. I haven’t heard of any discussion around changing the way categories are edited. The way category pages are displayed is mainly controlled by your theme.

I would interpret the question as, will the Gutenburg editor be available to edit categories? That is, the traditional category editor supports a textarea field for the description. Can you make it so the Gutenbug editor appears there, too?

Of course the _display_ of the resulting category description (now containing blocks) would be up to the theme, but much of Gutenbug itself makes assumptions that there is code on the front end to display Guutenbug elements.

Probably not many themes display the category description because it is just a textarea, non-wysiwyg. Apply Gutenburg to that, and maybe developers will start using it.

Can one if the developers add this as a feature request? Seems like a great idea, and certainly would be applicable to all taxonomies, like tags, for example. (And look at other textarea fields, like author bio, media caption/description, menu description… if we have to have this new editor in the first place, might as well be consistent.)

@bkproductions, Sounds like we are on the same page. Surprised this hasn’t already been implemented. In my option it would be a nice addition.

    Hiya,

So, this isn’t planned for the initial release with WordPress 5.0, but it’s something we may look into for phase 2 of Gutenberg, where it embraces the customizer, and thus gives more control of the elements surrounding the content as well.

No guarantees though, we’ll have to see what happens when we get there, all i can say for certain is that it’s not on the table for the current iteration.

Okay Thanks, Hopefully that can get incorporated into phase 2.

I was also wondering, when WP 5.0/Gutenberg is released will it include a new theme?

    Thanks again,
    Clint

We are currently working on a new default theme, Twenty Nineteen. If it will be included in 5.0 or come out after it I can’t say at this time, as it was very recently started on and the development time on feature themes has generally been longer than the anticipated time left before the next WordPress release.

It might be ready though, I can’t say for certain, but there is a new theme in the works at least.

    Okay thanks,
I plan on starting some new projects utilizing Twenty Seventeen. How different will the new theme be from Twenty Seventeen. Will it be radically redesigned for Gutenberg/WP 5.0?
    Thanks again for your help,
    Clint

    It will be very different.
