Today I have tested the gallery with the newest Gutenberg version 4.0 RC 1 and there is still the problem that Gutenberg chooses the size of the gallery items (which is in my case the large size, theme twenty sixteen). With the old editor it is possible to change the size to thumbnail, medium or whatever. Why is this not possible with Gutenberg? This is really annoying because – for example – if the gallery has three columns and consists of four images, Gutenberg places the fourth image in the second row in almost full size. How can I change this? I want to decide what the size of the gallery items should be and I really don’t like that Gutenberg makes the decision for me.

I think, using the large image size to display the gallery items is not good for page speed either.

    THank you in advance!

  • Agreed. I can’t understand the fact that I still can’t choose the image size in a gallery. Also, the gallery format itself is terrible. If I select three columns in a gallery, I don’t want the last image of it to occupy a whole row.

Media items like this are still an open issue that is being worked on, you can follow along at https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/6177 to provide feedback on the progress, or participate in testing and finding solutions to various image related scenarios.

    Hi Marius,
thank you for your answer. It’s kind of frustrating, that Gutenberg decides how my gallery should look like, but thanks anyway for the github-link.

As I like the old gallery function and I have told my clients to use the WordPress core feature gallery and not a plugin I have another question: Is it after WP 5.0 still possible to use the old gallery shortcode? I tried it with WP 4.9.8 and the shortcode block of Gutenberg and it worked well – I got my thumbnail gallery. But will the gallery shortcode – something like “[gallery link="none" ids="218,217,219,220,221,216,209,210,211,212,213"]” still work with WP 5.0?

I have my reasons to insist on the thumbnail size, because for example I have galleries with team members and I cannot use the Gutenberg gallery, if with Gutenberg the last image (the last team member) occupies a whole row.

Yes, the shortcode will still work as before. We have no plans to remove that, as it’s been a part of WordPress for a very long time and if we removed it, we would be breaking many, many sites ??

Thank you! I’m relieved to hear this. That’s good news.
