As the title states, i can’t seem to get Jetpack Publicize to work with Twitter. I had a number of issues this morning where Jetpack kept wanting to set itself up as if i had just installed it. Finally, it appears to be fairly stable, but new posts aren’t showing up on my Twitter. TBH i haven’t used my site in a while, so i’m not sure how long it’s been failing to update Twitter.

Earlier today, after Jetpack finally stopped trying to re-connect, i happened to be exploring sharing settings, and it gave me an error message 500 status code for "POST /sites/52891030/publicize-connections/new" so i contacted Dreamhost who said they couldn’t find any error related to xml-rpc in the logs.

And just now Jetpack is trying to activate itself again. What?? I deactivated it and uninstalled it, then re-installed it. I did also notice that i’m unable to select the option to make connection available to all admin/editor/author accounts. I got the error message The Twitter account was unable to be updated.

    Anybody have any ideas?

Hi @transmothra, could you try completely reconnecting Twitter following all of the steps at https://jetpack.com/support/publicize/twitter/#reconnecting-twitter and then let us know how it goes after your next freshly published post? (Jetpack will not re-Publicize existing posts in this manner.)

Okay, so i started following the instructions, to the letter, in order. Here’s what happened:

    1. just to see what would happen, and confirm the error, i clicked on “Connection available to all administrators, editors, and authors” and this time it worked
    2. published a new post, to confirm it still isn’t auto-sharing to Twitter (it still isn’t)
    3. Step 1: Disconnect Twitter from WP.com Sharing settings
Result: error message: The Twitter account was unable to be disconnected.

Also noticed that Jetpack has come unglued again from my WP install. I’ve already tried deactivating and deleting, then starting with a fresh installation.

    Okay @supernovia – just now i

    1. cleared cookies/cache,
    2. revoked WP from Twitter,
    3. deactivated/deleted Jetpack
    4. reinstalled/activated Jetpack
    5. attempted to connect Twitter via Sharing settings
Result: 500 status code for "POST /sites/52891030/publicize-connections/new"

I’m definitely seeing a blocked connection now.

Are you running any security plugins? Also, how high is your Cloudflare security level set to?

If you’d like to continue this privately, please feel free to reach out via https://jetpack.com/contact-support/

@macmanx I’m using full SSL on Cloudflare. Here is a full list of plugins i’m using:

    • Advanced Custom Fields
    • Akismet Anti-Spam
    • Autoptimize
    • Classic Editor
    • Cloudflare
    • Gutenberg
    • Jetpack by WordPress.com
    • Really Simple SSL
    • Smush
    • The SEO Framework
    • UpdraftPlus – Backup/Restore
    • WP-Optimize
    • WP-Polls

Some of these are probably redundant. That’s because i’m borderline stupid, frankly, and am fully unsure of what i’m doing most of the time. Please do feel free to castigate me!

@macmanx Sorry! It’s set at medium currently.

I do see the following triggering a block: /xmlrpc.php?for=jetpack …but i’m not sure what to actually do.

    (@macmanx)

Ah, ok. Would you please try setting that to Low and see if there’s any improvement?

You won’t see any improvement on /xmlrpc.php?for=jetpack but everything else should work on Low.

    Thread Starter transmothra

    (@transmothra)

    Thank you @macmanx

Okay i’ve done that. I also created a rule:
    (http.request.uri eq "/xmlrpc.php?for=jetpack" and ip.geoip.country eq "US")
…although i’m not sure if that was a Good Idea, or a Really Terrible Idea.

What should i be doing at this point?

    Plugin Contributor James Huff

    (@macmanx)

That shouldn’t be necessary, they’ve whitelisted our IPs so you’re only seeing the block on the file because you’re not visiting from one of our IPs. ??

Are you able to configure Publicize without running into the same error you ran into earlier?

    Thread Starter transmothra

    (@transmothra)

I just set up Jetpack (twice in a row, after being prompted like i had only just activated it), and published a new post. Nothing new on Twitter.

    Plugin Contributor James Huff

    (@macmanx)

The good news is, your connection is working perfectly now, no problems there.

We also show in our logs your latest post passing through the Publicize system, but then there’s an error when we attempt to post to Twitter.

Are you able to manually share these links on Twitter without encountering an error from them?

    Thread Starter transmothra

    (@transmothra)

@macmanx I was able to manually share a post with no problem. I then published a test post with no result. I also note that Tumblr isn’t seeing any new posts either.

    (@transmothra)

And now Jetpack is back to prompting me to set it up yet again.

    (@transmothra)

I just published a test post and still nothing. Any ideas, @macmanx or @supernovia? Thanks.
