Blue line shows but no adsense ads

I added my first ad unit and it appears to add in successfully in adsense and WP Quads. I set the ads to display in the side bar and at the bottom of each page. I immediately get a blue line in the two places I expect ads but no ads. I suspected Google just needed to catch up so I waited over a week – no joy. I checked the ad under my ads in my adsense page and it showed “new” for quite some time then just disappeared. I’ve since re-added the ad unit and updated the ad unit in WP Quads and it’s back to where it was – just a blue line.
