Show swatches without creating variations

I don’t have the need to track inventory or change prices based on variations. I just want customers to be able to select from all of the colors and patterns available. In the Product data > Attributes section, I tried deselecting the “Used for variations” checkbox, but that caused the swatches not to show up at all. How can I just display swatches without creating a ton of variations?
