I uploaded a few images to my server and saw they have compression artifacts that were not present in the original JPGs I uploaded. Does WordPress natively compress images? I don’t recall seeing this happen before (perhaps I didn’t scrutinize as much before…).

Many thanks for your time and attention!

    Steven,
Thank you so much. I saw that earlier and wasn’t sure if it was still applicable since it was from a few years ago. I will start tweaking now.

    Have a great day!

Hmm…So does that mean I should still use it…or not…? I’m not sure how many legacy devices are looking at WordPress these days, and I’m sure there are many modern broadband-enabled devices that can handle the full image quality…

I already updated functions.php and regenerated thumbnails.

Thanks Steven for directing me here.

However, this still doesn’t address my issue. I have no problem WP having compressed thumbnails for its own admin purposes and small icons. However, I want WP to always use my own native images, without touching it and without _any_ of its creations in my posts.

Scott, yes, go ahead and use it. It still works when you add new images (though it won’t go back an change what’s already there). You could use the plugin “enable media replace” to replace the already compressed images.

Suncoret, the filter will prevent WP from compressing the derivative images that it creates on uploads.

    Hi Steven,
Thank you. I’ll see how the images look going forward. I used Regenerate Thumbnails and don’t really see a difference. Then again, I’m pixel-peeping and no one will know what the original looked like.

Enable Media Replace…I’ll give that a shot, too.

    Thanks!
    Scott
