Theme Editor Fails with blank screen

I was trying to update a theme file. I used the basic file editor in the themes section of appearance. Rather than saying success, it loads a blank white screen. I checked the source and the source was the number, “1”, only, and nothing else. If anyone can tell me why this fails like this, I would like to know. It has also done this several other times, but I never checked the source before.
