Posting (the method) values to Edit Post Form

I have a plugin that adds hidden input fields to the form on the Edit Post/Page pages. When I save the post, I get the error:

Your attempt to edit this post [postname] has failed.

I assume there is some security in place similar to the register_settings that needs to happen for custom option pages.

Can somebody fill me in or at least point me to some documentation? I have had no luck finding anything like this.
