    Hi,

I am trying to set a placeholder value on a select-dropdown in a contact form, so that users are forced to choose an option. I don’t want them to be able to submit the form without choosing an option. As such, the first option should not be submitable – it should only act as a placeholder and say something like ‘Pick a size’.

How can I make this happen with Jetpack Contact Forms?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    Hi –

I’m happy to help you get this contact form customized.

Could you lay out the idea for the entire form, or is it only the “pick a size” requirement that you need help with?

There’s a check box that is labeled required and I think that’s what you’re missing in your set up. Take a look at the step-by-step instructions on this page:

Let me know you still need help after giving that a try.

    Hi,

I only need help with the ‘Pick a size’-requirement.

The checkbox next to the list of options is already checked, so the list is set as required, but I am still able to submit the form without choosing another option than ‘Pick a size’. This is why I want ‘Pick a size’ to act as a placeholder instead of an actual option to be submitted.

Ok. When I go to the contact page at https://heat.se/kontakt/ the only required fields are name and email with no mention about sizing.

If you are making the changes, but it doesn’t seem to be saving properly, I suggest clearing your browser cache:

Another idea would be to make another field entry of comment or sizing and mark that required as depicted in the instructions that I sent above.

You’re on the wrong page – the form is on heat.se/bestall.

The <select> list of options that I need a placeholder for is the one below ‘Storlek (p? pellets)’ – with options ‘V?lj storlek’ <-(This means ‘Pick a size’), ‘6mm’, ‘8mm’, ‘ej pellets’.

I don’t want the form to be submittable when ‘V?lj storlek’ is chosen. The user should have to pick one of the other options in order for it to work.

    Hi there,

The problem here is that you have “V?lj storlek” added as an option in the drop-down. If you have it listed as an option, it can be selected, and the form will view that field as having been completed. It’s not possible to add a placeholder value for a selection drop-down like this in the form.

You should only add the actual options you want to be selectable in the Alternativ box in the contact form editor, so only the actual sizes. If you want to include an instruction, like “Pick a size”, that has to go in the F?ltetikett field instead, along with the field title.

Also noting your site is hosted on WordPress.com’s Business Plan, so you can get help with this via live chat support at https://wordpress.com/help/contact – the WordPress.com Business Plan includes full support for all issues related to the Jetpack plugin.
