Auto Upgrade to 2.8 Now Site is Down

I am having the same problem… would love to figure out a solution.

I get a 500 error

not helpful to me ??
I also manually deleted the plugins from FTP (backed them up, then created a fresh and empty plugins folder)
I also deleted the custom theme I was using.
but I still get the 500 error and I can’t access anything on the admin side
