Timeouts on Green Geeks

    Hi,

    I recently migrated to GreenGeeks shared hosting.

    Currently, I have several self-hosted videos, which push up the generated zip file size to 500mb.

    Prior to migrating, I’ve had no problems creating backups and restoring from duplicator. But now, I’m unable to backup/restore without their admin making temporary changes to max_execution_time (and other params that are not visible from cpanel).

    I’ve tried the 2 stage method – it works, but 1 stage seems to intelligently ignore some system files (e.g. htaccess). Also, manually creating a zip of WordPress files is not a reliable long-term solution.

    My question – what is a reasonable expectation for a duplicator-generated zip file on a shared hosting service?

  • Every host is different, we have seen some budget hosts do well with larger sites, while others are really stripped down and the hosts push for higher packages. If you try the DupArchive format (see settings > packages) you might be able to get better performance. Also look to try and use mysqldump if your host supports it.

    Unfortunately, DupArchive format tops out at 500MB (I’m at 680), so that option is out.

    Softaculous backup is size-independent, but it’s a really weird UI and this hosting service has limits on the number of backups.

    So, I’m spending New Years’s day cutting over from self-hosted videos (highly flexible) to youtube videos – that will eliminate my zip file size and other limits and I can go back to using duplicator…
