Changing tag output and adding additional class to img tag

Is it possible to add additional classes to the output of the img tag (i.e. i want to add lazy loading to the popular post images but all i get to output the image is {thumb_img} or {thumb)? I would also need to alter it so it uses data-src rather than src? Can this be done without altering the core plugin?
