Website Crashes/Activate Autoptimize

  • Hello,

    I’ve been using Autoptimize for about 2 years without any problems. Around 3-4 months ago, my website crashed immediately after updating all of my plugins. I was unable to reach any page on my website nor login to WordPress. After logging into my GoDaddy hosting account and opening Cpanel dashboard I noticed that the “memory usage” and “I/O usage” graphs that normally sit around 15% were now maxed out. Also, there were around 30 “PHP processes” running and normally there are around 2-3 processes running.

    The only way that I could bring the website back on-line was to kill all PHP processes in Cpanel and quickly login to WordPress and deactivate Autoptimize plugin. Since then, I’ve had Autoptimize plugin deactivated and had no problems with my website. Unfortunately, without the plugin my website load times have increased by 2-3 second on average.

    Today, I activated the Autoptimize plugin again and the same thing happened as described previously. So, I deactivated the plugin, removed and re-installed (Autoptimize Version 2.4.4) and the same thing happened.

    Below is the error I get in Chrome browser when website crashes:

    *Service Unavailable – The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later. Additionally, a 503 Service Unavailable error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

    Can you help or have any ideas of what might be hapenning?

    OK, first of all make sure all minification in W3TC is disabled to avoid any conflict. Then enable AO but only with CSS optimization, then only JS optimization and then only HTML optimization, goal being to pinpoint which one is causing the extra load?

    Thanks so much for your quick response.

    Ok, I verified W3 Total Cache minify settings were indeed disabled as shown below. The A/O plugin was installed, but deactivated. I checked Cpanel resource graphs and they showed less than 10% usage, only 2 PHP processes running and website working as expected.

    I then removed, re-installed and activated A/O plugin and left in default state (all optimization boxes UNchecked). I immediately looked at Cpanel resource graphs and they showed CPU 65%, memory maxed 100%, I/O maxed 100%, PHP processes jumped to 33. I lost connection to WordPress dashboard and the website gradually slowed to a crawl within 2-3 minutes and only the static home page was reachable.

    Only way to bring website back on-line was just as before mentioned, kill PHP processes and quickly login to WordPress and deactivate A/O plugin.

    in that case I’m at a loss I’m afraid; if all optimization boxes are unchecked then there is barely anything AO is doing. is there any information in the PHP errorlog that might give away a clue?

    Yes, I just checked and see a list of PHP fatal errors (log pasted below) during the 45 minutes I was testing the site with A/O enabled last night 1/8/19. No other errors were in the log since October 2018 which is around the time I started having the problem and disabled the A/O plugin.

    Wow, something’s terribly broken there mainstreetlaw … lots of errors _seem_ to have nothing to do with Autoptimize, lots of

    Class ‘W3TC\Util_Content’ not found

    and

    Cannot use output buffering

    , lots of errors from elementor and elementor-pro.

    This _seems_ to indicate that your theme or a plugin behave differently when AO is active and that that alternate behavior is breaking things badly.

    I think the best way forward to identify the culprit would be disable plugins and/or switch themes (on an non-production environment if possible). Based on the outcome we can decide on next steps.

    I have exactly same problem since i updated all plugins one week ago.

    When i enable autoptimize, website automatically crashes.

    I have to disable autoptimize from FTP or restore Backup to make website work again.

    Ok, thanks so much for your help this far. Unfortunately, I don’t have a non-production site for testing and I know just enough about WP to get myself in BIG trouble, so testing on the production site is probably not wise for me going at it alone.

    Over the next few days, I’ll figure out how to set-up a testing environment. Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated as I only know to use something like Duplicator plugin. I would call myself somewhere between a beginner-intermediate level WP user, so just need something simple if you know of anything.

    As Frank said, elementor seems to be doing something when AO is activated. AO has been changed/refactored significantly since version 2.4.0. Maybe they are relying on old behaviour of AO somehow?

    If the issue is indeed caused by elementor, then we should report to their devs as well.

    Can you confirm this (an ugly website crash) happens when you’re using both AO and Elementor @marcoevich ?
