I uploaded a new image to replace an existing image on my site. I opened the page editor and clicked on the image block I wanted to edit. The page editor portion of the screen went white, save for the following error message:
“The editor has encountered an unexpected error.”
Beside the error message are three buttons with the following text:
    1) Attempt recovery
    2) Copy post text
    3) Copy error
I copied and viewed the error details, and it seems to relate to a recent update to my email subscription service provider’s plugin. (MailerLite)

I’ll contact them, and yet thought others might have noticed similar. (Also, it’s completely bizarre to me that a seemingly unrelated plugin would affect WordPress’s image block, of all things.)

  • Thanks for posting this, I had this exact error and deactivating mailerlite recovered my ability to insert an image as well as my Yoast SEO workspace within writing a post (which had been blank). Very odd, hopefully mailerlite will fix, as I was hoping to switch to them soon.

@rentingtherain I didn’t even get far enough to notice its impact on Yoast. Yikes. I reached out to MailerLite. They’re looking into it. I hope to hear back from them today with a resolution, because I really like their service and interface. Peace.

UPDATE: A few minutes ago, I found an update to the MailerLite plugin awaiting installation. After installing the update, I checked a draft to hopefully find the issue had been resolved. It hasn’t.

When adding an image block, a block is created with the following text appearing: “This block has encountered an error and cannot be previewed.” Also, as noted above by rentingtherain, Yoast displays only its navigation buttons below the post. Where its content is meant to exist, there’s only white space.

MailerLite issued two updates to their plugin. The first didn’t work, the second did. All known errors I observed are resolved.
