Dunno why I just thought of this, but here goes.

Let’s say I have a website that sells red cars in Nottingham.

I’ve gone into the WordPress settings and under ‘general’ I’ve added the site title ‘Steve Raven Motors’ – with the tagline ‘Red cars a speciality!’.

In my Yoast seo snippet, all is geared up for this and the words ‘Red Cars in Nottingham at Steve Raven Motors’ ?? appear at the start of the snippet.

Seeing as I’m using this page as a static homepage in WordPress ‘reading’ settings, all that will be visible according to the permalink settings would be the domain url – for eg steveravenmotors.com

Quick question then – should the WordPress TITLE of this page be ‘Homepage’ or Steve Raven Motors’ or ‘Red Cars in Nottingham at Steve Raven Motors’? Or doesn’t it matter either way?

  • You should set title for the static homepage that you think is best for your audience. We are not familiar with your audience so we cannot say what it should be.

However, as you are using a static page you can go to the page on the backend, find the Yoast SEO Metbox (the box that appears at the bottom of the WordPress editor area), click on Edit Snippet and then add in a title.

If you are not sure what would be a good title please use this guide: https://yoast.com/page-titles-seo/

Yes, understood – but in the above example, where Yoast is taking care of the snippet variables and publishing these in Google – could I not just use ‘Home’ as the title of the webpage and then rewrite over ‘Home’ with Yoast snippets?

Correct. Whatever you place in the that Snippet Editor are as the SEO Title is what will appear in Google. It does not affect the title of the page. That is expected to remain the same.

Super – that means I can now consider renaming lots of page titles that are sprawling across my admin panel, and rename them to just the keyword/keyphrase whilst Yoast does all the snippet submission stuff.

Yes the ‘Edit Snippet’ function allows you to set the title and description in the metadata, and that is what is expected to appear in Google.
