4 Default Templates

  • I would like to ask of the developers if they would consider packing 4 default templates with every WP stable release.
    1st Template: the included default layout
    2nd template: a 3 column version of the included default layout
    3rd template: the basic layout but at a centered, fixed width (ala Greeny, Kubrick, etc.)
    4th template: 3 column version of the 3rd template
    I’m not asking for anymore to be done to the current layout that comes packed with WP other than to just alter it so that it is available in the 3 other layouts.
    From what I’ve seen, I think these are pretty much the majority of layouts you see on other WP sites.
    Am I asking too much? From a design and coding view I don’t know, i don’t know what it takes to get 3 addt’l layouts like this accomplished.
    But this way you would give people 4 great alternatives – this is great for those who don’t have a lot of coding skill, and those who don’t want to wait for other 3rd party Theme developers to “catch-up” to the latest release of WP (ala Kubrick, Lee’s templates, etc.)
    Take this though further and with every alpha release the templates should still be able to work, again, not having to worry about toerh 3rd party templates not working,etc.
    IMHO I think this would be a HUGE draw for people considering WP – having it come packed with 4 layouts to choose from instead of hunting and searching and customizing either from scratch or other templates, having to figure out how to make 3 columns, etc. etc.
    So that’s my 2 cents< I hope it’s not asking much but it’s something i’d personally love to see, and maybe if anyone else thinks it’s a good idea they could respond here at least get the developers to think hard about it ??

  • I personally want them to worry more about the functionality, bugs, and security issues. I think most people take the default template and switch it right off the bat to a template readily available. In addition, it doesn’t take more than a few seconds to find premade templates.
    Google Search for “WordPress templates”
    WordPress forums search for “templates”
    Beloved moderator podz lists a bunch in this thread.
    Kubrick does work in the latest stable version (Mingus 1.2.1), and Ryan Boren ported it for WP 1.3 alpha versions. You can always try those other templates to see if they’ll work for 1.3a as well. But there’s a reason why it’s called an alpha version. Use the latest stable version and you won’t have a problem with layouts breaking when they upload a new nightly.
    In regards to modifying them further, doing another search for CSS reference on Google shows more than enough to tweak things to your liking. Once it’s set the way you like it, you can backup the wp-layout.css file in case something ever goes awry.
    I don’t know CSS that well either, but people like us have to at least take some effort to try. The learning curve isn’t that bad…really.
    I hope you don’t think I’m putting you down. I’m not. It’s just that the developers and so many people here work hard to put up as much information as possible. We can show our appreciation by searching just a few minutes to see the wealth of information available.

    I think that putting some links to available themes in the readme document is a better idea. There would be endless, and needless debate over which four templates to include, which is why I favour a list of links.

    Someone from hackers’ forum showed something awesome concerning template. It’s pretty much what you proposed. But I’ll let that person to announce it himself.

    learning curve tip for CSS:
    Found this…somewhere. :S If you’re having trouble distingushing what in your stylesheet affects what on your site, pick a section, and add a contrasting border to the entire section–something that will pop out, like red against white. Then look at the results, and bingo! ?? HTH.

    I thought Kubrick was going to be the new default? It would be a shame if that idea has been shelved because of the tantrums of certain individuals.

    Kubrick Fan – not quite… as the last two posts noted, that’s a dead horse, Kubrick is NOT going to be the new template, nor was it ever. What happened was that SOME ELEMENTS of Kubrick and the way it worked would be included, but not Kubrick itself. There’s a thread around here where that was discussed ad nauseum. I’m sure if your search for it, you cna find it.

    I think Kubrick Fan was not being a troll, rather the comments are indicative of the confusion that went on and on and on with all that BS that happened over the summer and early autumn.

    I object to being called a troll, and Michael Heilemann himself was told that a version of Kubrick was being adopted for 1.3. That would be a strange thing to say if it wasn’t true and you can see why it might confuse people. But it’s obviously a touchy subject around here so I’ll just drop it and hope there is at least a link to Kubrick in the readme!

    To clarify, the Kubrick template was being ADAPTED for USE WITH the new version of WordPress, NOT as a default template. Subtle differences, but significant.

    We can show our appreciation by searching just a few minutes to see the wealth of information available.

    A search for “Kubrick” would have brought up that shopworn thread and you might have gained some insight as to what actually transpired with regard to the proposed templates for 1.3. Heilemann himself admits:

    But quite honestly, I’m not sure exactly how much or how little will make it into the final thing, so now you know what I know.

    So nothing appears to be set in stone here. However, the thread to which I refer did appear to polarize some of the WP community into one camp or the other (I am neutral) so you can see how that comment almost too casually dropped at the end of your otherwise innocuous post might have been taken askew.
    I apologize for my harsh use of the term troll. I was out of line.

    Personally, I really like Kubrick, and it’s a great template to start with. It’s very easy to figure out if you want to customize it, and have little Photoshop experience, of course. However, this probably isn’t the best thing for a default template, as a default template should look nice and be put in place for those who do not need customization or can’t do customization themselves.
    Kubrick fans are just fans of Kubrick, not trolls. Just think, if all Kubrick fans are trolls for suggesting Kubrick, then we’re all trolls for suggesting WordPress. It’s the same thing. Wendykroy, I know you apologized, but I just wanted to get that across. I’m getting very tired of seeing people jump on Kubrick Fan every time he suggests Kubrick. He’s not being a troll, he’s just letting his personal preference be known in relative topics.
