• I have a very bizarre problem. I can’t upload images using Media > Library – every time I try I get a “Unable to create directory . Is its parent directory writable by the server?” error.

The crazy thing is that I can upload using Media > Add New with no issues.

I’ve checked file permissions, reinstalled WordPress and the Theme, optimized the database and tried everything else I can think of.

I’m at a loss. Any idea what is causing this and how to fix it?

    >> Is its parent directory writable by the server? <<

Is it? What are the ownerships and permissions of wp-contents, wp-contents/uploads, and so on down the tree to wherever this upload is supposed to be going.

It is writable. When I use Media > Add New everything works exactly as it should. That’s why this is so confusing.

I just double checked and uploaded a file using Media > Add New and it shows up in the 2019 > 01 directory as it should.

If you add an image as part of a post, it goes into wp-content/uploads/date-of-the-posts’s directory, not today’s directory.

I don’t understand what you mean – if I upload an image today it should go into today’s directory. And that is what it does right now.

That’s not the issue I’m having though – I can’t upload images using the Media > Library feature, only Media > Add New.

If the library is in list mode, try switching it to a grid view. See if that makes a difference.

That’s even weirder – in list mode it does nothing. When I drag an image into the window it just opens the image and does not upload anything.

In grid mode when I drag an image into the window it uploads the image as it should.

Thanks. I’ll get back to the guy who gave me that suggestion.
