• Hi, I apologise for the long story, but I really need to paint the full picture (also, I have very little tech knowledge – just a hobby blogger here – so I hope this makes sense):

I switched hosting from Hostgator to Bluehost in October, then switched domain registration to Bluehost in December. My site went down for a week in mid-December because of an oversight (on Bluehost’s part) with the domain registration switchover, but since it was fixed there have been a lot of problems with my WordPress site: the backend has reverted back to a much older version (plugins I used to have are gone, code I had gone too) and I have lost all content (pages/posts) from October onwards. After much back and forth with Bluehost support chat, they are adamant that this is a site issue, not a hosting issue.

On a side note, I seem to remember in December that the new version of WordPress was launched and the backend looked different. So, hosting aside, did I somehow reject the new version of WP and this is why it has reverted? If so, how do I get it back?

Second side note: I have a backup of my site from October, from before I switched hosting. It won’t bring back my lost posts etc. but I’m hoping this could restore the backend to how I had it set up before. However, I want to check first if there is a way to get my content and backend back to normal?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

WP cannot “revert” itself. I suspect your host restored an earlier backup.

What version of WP are you using? Have you installed the Classic Editor plugin?

I suspect that too, but I’m getting nowhere speaking to Bluehost and Hostgator.

WP version 5.0.3 if that helps.

I haven’t installed the Classic Editor plugin.

I see only one plugin on a 5.0.3 install and it is Gutenberg so that should be redundant if it really is the Gutenberg plugin.

So WordPress may have updated somewhere during this move but is not reverted as 5.0.3 is the latest Greatest and has the Gutenberg Block Editor.

You might like the Classic Editor Plugin as that will bring back the older editor used before the block editor came out. https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/classic-editor/

With the Classic editor plugin, you’ll probably feel more at home with your WordPress.

You might find some of your missing posts in the backup’s database file but I’d be very careful restoring that. Backup the current site completely first so you’ll have a recovery option.

Same with your plugins and possibly media files even. The plugins will be in a backup of the directory structure…

You might also want to run the Broken Link Checker plugin as it might help you find items that should have been restored but are missing. I wouldn’t leave that running too long without throttling its settings back. It is a resource hog but worth it. Set the time back to every 480 hours after a week of being set to 72 hour cycles.

This plugin is right dated but I’m still running it on 5.0.3 even. https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/broken-link-checker/
