    Hi everyone,

I’ve been wasting away trying to figure out this problem…
Upon manually updating my WordPress, I now get the same message as before the update (hence the manual attempt):
“The package could not be installed.: PCLZIP_ERR_MISSING_FILE (-4) : Missing archive file ‘ ‘ ”
All the helps for this seem to point to a created temp folder in the wp-content folder (I navigate this with cpanel) but this error message doesn’t mention a temp folder as part of the error.
Also, when I try to change the lines of code people suggest in the wp-config.php file, the same errors keep appearing. Nothing seems to work.

    Any further ideas?

    Thanks,
    Ernie

Also, the front end of our website looks like this:

Fatal error: Class ‘WP_Block_Type_Registry’ not found in /home4/still1885/public_html/artsandeducation/wp-includes/script-loader.php on line 2421

How did you “manually” update WP?

    Thread Starter erniedoose

    (@erniedoose)

    Hi Steven,

    I followed the instructions here:

    Updating WordPress

So I swapped out the wp-admin and wp-includes folders.

    Thread Starter erniedoose

    (@erniedoose)

The WordPress dashboard update link kept giving me the same error message, so I followed those instructions. Now I get the same message when I click “re-install now” on the dashboard.

    Download wordpress and unzip locally.

Open your site in your favorite FTP client.

Delete *all* .php files in the root of the site except wp-config.php.

    Delete wp-admin and wp-includes

Upload all the files and directories you just unzipped.

    Thread Starter erniedoose

    (@erniedoose)

    Thanks for the help, Steven,

I followed the steps and now get these errors on WordPress:

Warning: require_once(/home4/still1885/public_html/artsandeducation/wp-load.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home4/still1885/public_html/artsandeducation/wp-admin/admin.php on line 31

You didn’t upload all the files. Upload the root files too, not just the two directories.

    Thread Starter erniedoose

    (@erniedoose)

You’re right, now I see. I uploaded all the files this time, all but the wp-config.php and wp-content, then replaced the wp-admin and wp-includes with the new ones, but it’s looking worse – I can’t access the wordpress dashboard at all now. It just shows:

    Index of /wp-admin
    Parent Directory
    wp-admin/
Apache Server at https://www.artsineducation.org Port 80

And now the front end of our website gets this messages:

Warning: require(/home4/still1885/public_html/artsandeducation/wp-includes/load.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home4/still1885/public_html/artsandeducation/wp-settings.php on line 19

I hope I didn’t do irreparable damage to our website… I may contact a pro to help me out first hand if I can’t figure it out, just to be safe. Thanks for the continued help.

Again, it appears you didn’t upload the “loose” files in the site’s root:

This is what should be there.

I’m pretty sure I updated the root, it’s just my public_html folder, correct? I wish I knew how to attach a screenshot here, but for now here’s a list of my current root folder’s files and the date they were updated:

Please check with your host to see if the root of your site is in public_html or public_html/oneofthoseartsdirectories

Judging from the error message, the “root” of your site is actually in the /public_html/artsandeducation/ directory. This is where the WordPress files should go. The root files go in there, the wp-includes and wp-admin and such directories are subdirectories of that. Like /public_html/artsandeducation/wp-includes.

Really, it seems like all you have to do is to put the files in the correct locations.

    Hi Samuel,

I updated all the files in /public_html/artsandeducation/ as instructed first, then tried the public_html folder. I just reinstalled the same files again in /artsandeducation/ to try it but the same issues are happening. Here’s the list of files for that folder:

You seem to have made a fair mess of files on the site, but the error message is seemingly very clear: The /public_html/artsandeducation/wp-includes/load.php file is missing, so the site doesn’t work.

Until you get all the files in the all the right locations, the site won’t work. This isn’t hit or miss, there is a defined way that the site must exist. You have these separate ZIP files in there, and some other stuff lying around.

Try saving a backup copy of the wp-config.php file (this is the one that matters), clearing out that directory (not wp-content though, that matters too), and then putting a fresh set of WordPress files on there. As they are supposed to be. In that directory. With those subdirectories.

    Thread Starter erniedoose

    (@erniedoose)

When adding the admin and includes folders, the wording was confusing and I created a sub directory within its own folder, but I fixed that and can get into wordpress again. And the website is working!

However, Word Press still won’t update all the plugins (the whole reason I got into this mess), and our website has a lot of extra code text throughout, as well as links for things like “essay writer…?”

Making “a fair mess of files” was a nice way of putting it, I really appreciate the help.

We do have another issue now: our other website difiorecenter.org goes to our artsandeducation.org website. Is there an easy fix for that?

    Thanks again.
