    Good Afternoon

We are unfortunately experiencing problems with our woocommerce inventory randomly being increased by the system. We are unable to identify the trigger or process which is causing this.

    Typical scenario:
    1. Sell an item that has an inventory of 1 in our store (website).
    2. Inventory correctly reduces to zero.
    3. Minutes later, inventory increases again by 1 without any intervention / changes to the order / changes to individual product.

This does not happen consistently. We have had 4 orders today, and this issue has only occurred for one order.

Unfortunately we’re not sure where to start debugging.

Does anybody have some suggestions about how to resolve / troubleshoot this issue?

    Thanks
    Brad

    Hi Brad,

    Thanks for reaching out!

What is the status of the one order with this issue? If order status was pending payment and then changed to cancelled – this is expected behaviour.

This does not happen consistently. We have had 4 orders today, and this issue has only occurred for one order.

Unfortunately we’re not sure where to start debugging.

Does anybody have some suggestions about how to resolve / troubleshoot this issue?

It’s hard to say what exactly is happening with the current amount of information. Are all plugins up to date? Are you using any stock management plugins?

This kind of problem can be caused by either a conflict with your theme or with another plugin.
    ?
The best way to determine this is to:
    ?

    • Temporarily switch your theme to Storefront
    • Disable all plugins except for WooCommerce
    • Repeat the action that is causing the problem

If you’re not seeing the same problem after completing the conflict test, then you know the problem was with the plugins and/or theme you deactivated. To figure out which plugin is causing the problem, reactivate your other plugins one by one, testing after each, until you find the one causing conflict. You can find a more detailed explanation on how to do a conflict test here.

If this kind of test isn’t possible on your live site – you can create a staging site with WP Staging plugin and test there.

    Good Evening

Thanks very much for the detailed reply. We appreciate the suggestions. We started a process of elimination last week, however the issue only occurs in about 1 in 10 orders (actual orders, not dummy orders). In our own testing of 10 orders we were unable to reproduce the issue at all. Subsequently, we saw the issue arise from an order after our testing without making any chancing to plugins or themes. The worry here is that 10 plugins x 10 tests = 100 tests to find the issue. We suspect we may just need to go down this path.

However, is there any audit / debugging tool that we can utilise that will likely provide sufficient detail regarding what files / events are triggering the stock qty change? We’re currently using WP Security Audit Log, but can’t seem to get granular or detailed enough information.

    Thanks again in advance.

    Hi Brad,

Thank you for the additional details!

Can you please confirm if the status of “problematic” orders is Processing or Completed and not Pending payment or Cancelled?

Are you using any stock management plugins?

Please copy your System Status Report from WooCommerce >> Status and paste it here, perhaps I’ll be able to spot something obvious.

Some of the errors are logged in WooCommerce >> Status >> Logs, although there is a chance that this behaviour isn’t registered as an actual error by the system.

You can also enable wp_debug_log to store errors to a file. There’s no guarantee you’ll get any useful information either.

Depending on your payment gateway plugin you might be able to enable the debug logging in the settings of the payment method, there’s a chance this behaviour is related to the payment gateway plugin and some useful information will appear in the error log.
