I’ve tried a pretty extensive set of searches, and been unable to find an easy answer for this, though I did find a workaround. Figured I’d share my experience, in hopes that perhaps I’m missing something really obvious.

I added a List Block in Gutenberg. I used a simple default bullet list. Entered in four list items, and published the page.

The list block, in the Twenty Seventeen theme, is aligned to the left of the standard Paragraph block above it which, of course, looks terrible.

I could not find anywhere in the documentation or forums on how to fix this. This is a very basic install of WordPress 5.0.3, with an absolutely minimal number of plugins.

After a great deal of searching I decided to install the Classic Editor and Indent List Buttons plugins, and was able to properly indent the bullet list.

I then deactivated the Classic Editor and edited the page in Gutenberg again. I had a little cleanup to do on the Paragraph blocks above the List, but the formatting was retained on the list itself, and I’m continuing to make changes to the page using Gutenberg.

This just seems so bizarre to me, that WordPress can’t properly indent a simple list, that I figured I must be doing some wrong. Perhaps someone here can provide guidance.

  • Hi Tom, realistically whether or not lists are indented is a bit more subjective, than objective design taste. Your best bet is to honestly add a bit of CSS to the list items in order to indent them for you. I can help you out with that if you’d point me to a page where you’re using a list block (so I can double-check we’re using proper selectors).

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Rich,

Sorry for the delayed response. I agree it is a bit subjective, but the way the Block List is working now it seems the bullets/numbers jut to the left of the paragraphs above and below.

I’m just starting with WP and am building the first page of content locally, so it’s not published yet, but do appreciate the offer of assistance.

I did ultimately figure out how to create a CSS Class in Theme Customization, then add that Class to the List Block, giving me the control I wanted, so I’m back on Gutenberg blocks and have disabled the old editor – at least for now.
