• I’ve been attempting to upload a media file within a draft post via the PowerPress plugin for my podcast, to publish on Monday. I keep getting this error related to the Gutenberg plugin:

Fatal error: Call to a member function is_block_editor() on null in /home/eatmove5/public_html/darrenstehle/wp-content/plugins/gutenberg/lib/widgets.php on line 13

I’ve logged out and back in. I deactivated the plugin, but when going into the post when I clicked into a block I was given options to copy text, attempt to recover post, and something else.

I emailed Blubrry support. The suggested a plugin to disable Gutenberg blocks. I installed and activated “Disable Gutenberg” then deactivated “Gutenberg”. I was able to upload and verify the media file.

However, are you able to address what that “fatal error” message above means?

    Thanks

  • This sounds like a plugin incompatibility with the PowerPress plugin and the block editor. I assume they are working on any of the compatibility issues when they get to it. If you really want to use the block editor, I was able to upload an .mp3 file via an audio block into the media library. And taking the URL from there, I was to verify the URL via the Bluberry metabox.

Another way is to install the Classic Editor plugin, and set the settings under “Writing” to “Allow users to switch editors” and then you get a choice for your post. To add the content you can use the Block editor, when it comes to uploading the .mp3 file, you can switch over to the Classic Editor and finish the post.

    Thanks Birgit.

I sent the error first to Blubrry customer service and they think it’s a blocks/Gutenberg issues. The Blubrry plugin hasn’t been updated in a while, has worked perfectly for the last 9 months; but Gutenberg and other Block plugins HAVE updated many times.

So who knows. I tried to remove the Gutenberg plugin, thinking that was now the functionality of the current WP software, but then I can’t make any changes to posts whatsoever.

I will use your workaround with Classic Editor as you suggested for now.

It looks like there is a problem between the Gutenberg plugin and the current WP core 5.1.1.

With WP 5.1.1 I shouldn’t need the Gutenberg plugin, correct?

When I disable the Gutenberg plugin (and classic editor as well) I created a new post. As I was typing the title and error message box overlayed with the message,

“The editor has encountered an unexpected error” and then 3 buttons: attempt recovery, copy post text, copy error.

I clicked attempt recovery, I’d be back in the draft post, a second later the same error message.

When I reactivate the Gutenberg plugin, and then attempt to upload a media file to Bluburry via the PowerPress plugins available in the post, I get this error message:

“Fatal error: Call to a member function is_block_editor() on null in /home/eatmove5/public_html/darrenstehle/wp-content/plugins/gutenberg/lib/widgets.php on line 13”

I suspect this started after 5.1.1 updated on my site.

    Hmm, that’s unfortunate.
The error message is a bit too cryptic to make any sense without context
    Sorry for that…

Are you able to load the content into the classic editor?

When you saw the earlier message with the three buttons, did you by any chance use the ‘Copy error” button?

Can you reproduce the first error? and jot down the configuration? without any other plugin loaded?

the error message ‘Call to a member function is_block_editor() on null’ seems to be triggered by the Gutenberg plugin, but I am wondering if the function call could come from a different process….

Good morning, I did a little research and discovered that there is a known bug when you go back to a previous version of Gutenberg. The version in 5.1.1 is Gutenberg 4.8 – once you deactivated Gutenberg 5.3 that older version became active again and triggered the error message. That’s if I understood this correctly.

So, first, see if the problem persists when you activate Gutenberg 5.3 again.

There will be also be a fix available in the 5.4, scheduled to be released on Wednesday.

When you saw the earlier message with the three buttons, did you by any chance use the ‘Copy error” button?

when I clicked nothing happened, BUT I didn’t think of “pasting” anywhere either so not sure if that would have produced content.

    The original error message of:

“Fatal error: Call to a member function is_block_editor() on null in /home/eatmove5/public_html/darrenstehle/wp-content/plugins/gutenberg/lib/widgets.php on line 13”

was not a result of me turning off any plugins. That message prompted me to first contact Blubrry in the hopes of fixing the issue and being able to upload my podcast media. I can only presume that the latest WP core or Gutenberg update within the last 10 days is the source of the problem.

I am going to wait until Wednesday when 5.4 is released. If the issues isn’t fixed when I turn it back on, I will attempt to get more information as per your questions.

@bph this morning I saw the update for the Gutenberg plugin. Before I updated, I turned off “Classic Editor” and turned the older Gutenberg on. I went into a draft post, clicked in a block, and the three button error message popped up. I copied and pasted the error message here:

When I then updated Gutenberg with today’s release, everything appears to have been resolved. I am able to edit posts. Once I have a new podcast to upload I will test that as well.
