Can you restore a WordPress site?

  • Hi,

    I cancelled my Managed WordPress with godaddy last night as they had billed me for a renewal that I hadn’t consented to (it’s been refunded). But after speaking with a friend this morning who’s willing to pay half of the cost, I got in touch with godaddy who said they could restore the wordpress site for an extra ￡104 fee. If I pay for managed wordpress again, is there a way for me to restore my old posts on my own? I still own the domain through godaddy and wordpress only stopped last night (about 10 hours ago).

  • Hello letsnotthink,

    If you have access to Godaddy, I would suggest you access the cPanel if you could and the first download the source code and database.

    If not you can ask Godaddy to just provide you the code and database, don’t pay extra for just restoring the site.

    Once you have that data, you are safe as at least you have the required data with you which can be restored.

    So this should be your first and very important step for you.

    Thank you very much for your quick response!

    I don’t have Linux so I could never access cpanel I don’t think. And godaddy has just removed my access to wordpress through their website, so now all I have access to is my domain name.

    I can still log in to my wordpress account and all the stats for site visitors are there, but it’s just that all my blog posts are gone.

    Is there anything I can do?

    Do you have access to Admin Panel? Will you be able to install Plugin?

    Maybe we can plan to get some data via Plugin if you can install.

    Hi again Kartik,

    I’ve bought one more year of basic managed wordpress from godaddy to see if that would give me any control back. I get two options: ‘build a brand new website’, which asks me to create a new wordpress account, or migrate an existing site which has to have a live wordpress-powered site (and right now my website isn’t working because of the previously cancelled wordpress).

    I’ve tried logging into letsnotthink.com/wp-admin to try to access plugins but I just get a page that says ‘403 Forbidden’.

    Do you think there’s any other option except to pay the ￡104 restoration fee to godaddy?

    Sorry about all these questions! I’m not very good at technology!

    I’ve pressed ‘manage plugins’ and it says there are no active plugins.

    Do you happen to have a complete backup (files and database) handy that you downloaded from your website?

    If you do then protect that backup while you install a new WordPress on that Godaddy host you just bought.

    On that new install, I want you to install the backup plugin you used before. Recover your backup. You’ll need to FTP or use your CPs file manager to upload that backup. protect that backup… Easy Peasy.

    Baring that, and there are no good recovery options for you that makes sense, I found one archive of your website at the Wayback Machine which you can use to ‘jog your memory’ and maybe help you recover what you had.

    That’s the only options I can think of outside of asking GoDaddy to assist and paying their fee(s).
