• Trying to upgrade to 2.8.1 using the auto-update feature. yes, I know I can manually do it…but I shouldn’t have too. Auto-update has always worked for me. I can add plug-ins through the dashboard…I can delete them through the dashboard too (just tried). So…other features are working. I also tried disabling all plug-ins and reverting to the stock theme…but still no go.

I see others asking about this problem too. I dont think it’s me…any ideas?

  • what problem? you dont say what happens.

‘it doesnt work’ doesnt suffice, if you are expecting anyone to provide meaningful advice.

    It doesn’t work. Period.

    This is what WP says:

    “Installation Failed”

    That’s it.

Same for me. It asks for FTP details which are correct and work for updating plugins, and it says “Installation failed”.

Hmmm; I have a few 2.8 blogs I’m trying to upgrade. The first went fine, the other did exactly as you say.

Investigating now.. Doesn’t seem to be permission related, which was my first thought.

2.7.1 To 2.8 didn’t work for me either, but 2.8 to 2.8.1 did. You are trying the built-in option of the WPAU plugin? In any case, I never bothered and just did manual upgrades.

Last evening I went through the automatic upgrade from 2.7.1 to 2.8.1 just fine — no error messages. The version number 2.8.1 was written into my admin page.

So, fat, dumb and happy, I clicked on my blog url only to be shown NOTHING. Nothing was displayed, nothing at all.

And now this morning after restarting my computer I can’t even get to my admin page.

Why issn’t there something simple that can be done to solve this?

Same issues here with automatic upgrade using BlueHost. First, no posts on frontpage. Reinstalled, front page looked fine after I went to default theme but when I clicked on links to pages or any post, got 404 on every link. Can still get into admin page but it seems that after three installs there is something always wrong. is a manual install the only choice left? Even if, some people are still complaining of bad installs like this.

Automatic upgrade 2.7.1 -> 2.8.1 finished with a success message.
Website seems ok when viewed as user.

However, as administrator, I cannot manage the Widgets (dutch language enabled: Weergave – Widgets. In English, I guess: Appearance – Widgets).

I cannot open the used Widgets for editing nor can I drag them (altough the usual four-arrow-cross appears when hovering over an installed widget).

Furthermore the “Scherm” (english: “Screen”) drop-down box at the upper right is dead.

I just installed a fresh 2.8.1 Worpress from scratch. Language English.

Same behaviour: I cannot manage Widgets and the “Screen Options” button (as well as the “Help” button) does not work.

There are no extra plugins installed and the 2 default plugins (Akismet and Hello Dolly) are not activated.

Thanks Otto42, things are working again as they should. I followed the instructions in your link as far as I could. Steps 1 and 2, step 3 not (could not find Google Gears in my browsers plugins), 4 not (I had uploaded the files already a couple of times to differen blogs).

After downloading and activating “Use Google Libraries” the problems were gone. (B.t.w. downloading was not possible from the search plugins field in the Admin area because this feature was also in-operable.)

For the time being I am happy with this solution altough I think WordPress should also work without the “Use Google Libraries” plugin. IMHO this is an additional dependancy and updating could become more cumbersome in future releases.

Can I switch off the script concatenation features in WP?

Yes. Add this to the defines in your wp-config.php file:
    define('CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS', false);

That turns it off, without the plugin. The plugin is easier to install and test with. Also it’s a good plugin, makes things nice and fast.

    Thanks again Otto42.

I added define('CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS', false); to wp-config.php and turned off the “Use Google Libraries” plugin. WP still functioned correctly.
After I removed the abovementioned line again the errors were back.

So IMHO, script concatenation is a candidate for some extra attention from the developers.

As it is, I am glad the problems are solved and I am not solely dependent on Googles libraries.

teraines log into your dashboard and reset your permalinks. Also try browsing the forums. There are always lots of good answers to be found if one takes the time to look for them.
