Hi, I got the HTTP ERROR 500 error tonight while working on this page for a friend, and despite following all the advice I could find on the internet (.htaccess page, increasing memory, adding things to the wp-config file), it didn’t work.

Now, I emptied out my website’s folder, downloaded a fresh WordPress, and put it in the folder. It still gives me the HTTP ERROR 500.
I tried to remove everything again and put an index.html that I made to test if it works, and it works. An older version of the website (not WordPress) works. But the moment I try to put wordpress files onto the server, I get the HTTP 500 error.

Please help me, thank you so much.

I logged into the hosting provider, and changed back to PHP version 5.6. After that it did not work, but after I reverted back to version 7.0 it started working.

I do not know what I did to make it stop working and why this fixed it, but hopefully this can help someone.

You should be able to find the exact cause of the “Error 500” in your server error log. Usually located in /public_html/ but if not there ask your hosting provider to help finding it.
