I have a retail Website that uses Woocommerce. I also use a popular plugin called WordPress Popular Posts, that I use to display popular and most-viewed products in my sidebar.

People can click on those posts to see those products. It’s an important tie-in to my Woocommerce site.

As of Woocommerce 3.5.8, Woocommerce and WordPress Popular Posts were getting along just fine.

When I upgraded Woocommerce to 3.6.2, WordPress Popular Posts stopped working.

I reverted to Woocommerce 3.5.8 and it started working again.

I opened a ticket on the WordPress Popular Posts support page, and the developer did a fresh install of Woocommerce 3.6.2, and said that his plugin works just fine with it.

Of course, I didn’t do a fresh install; I did an upgrade to 3.6.2 from 3.5.8, and I know that upgrade had hundreds of changes.

The problem seems to have something to do with the upgrade to 3.6.2, rather than the installation of 3.6.2 itself.

If I revert to Woocommerce 3.5.8, WordPress Popular Posts works just fine. If I upgrade Woocommerce to 3.6.2, it stops working.

This is repeatable. Reversion fixes it, upgrading breaks it.

The WordPress Popular Posts developer suggested that I ask for help here.

Here’s the thread on the WordPress Popular Posts support page:

Suggestions? I can stick with 3.5.8, but I like to stay current.

    Hi Charlie!

Thank you for the link to the other thread!

In there, Hector suggested doing a full conflict test and I would suggest doing that as well.

The reason for that is when you upgrade WooCommerce, it uses the exact same files as if you install it from fresh, and since Hector didn’t have any problems with the latest version of WooCommerce, it would indicate that something on the site is causing this.

What I would suggest is create a staging site and do a conflict test on there to see if your theme or another plugin is causing this.

Try switching to the [Twenty Seventeen theme](https://www.ads-software.com/themes/twentyseventeen/), and see if the issue remains. If so, try disabling all of your plugins except WooCommerce and WordPress Popular Posts. Then try testing again to see if the issue persists. If that resolves your issue, enable each plugin one by one while continuing to test until you find the plugin that causes the issue.

If you don’t want to do this on your live site, you can clone your site to a staging environment, where you can test without affecting your users.

If your host doesn’t provide staging facilities, a simple way to do it is using the free WP Staging plugin:

Let us know if you still need help after this process.

“…when you upgrade WooCommerce, it uses the exact same files as if you install it from fresh…”

Upgrading Woocommerce from 3.5.8 to 3.6.2. makes no changes to the database? Or anything else?

I cannot believe that upgrading Woocommerce alone would cause some other plugin or theme to suddenly cause WordPress Popular Posts to not work anymore.

I don’t see how that could even be possible.

I’ll test it; there’s not much else to do. But if I ONLY upgrade Woocommerce, WPP breaks. If I revert, it works again.

OK. I copied my site to a staging site:

    https://www.retro-marketing.com/testdomain2

With all plugins activated and Woocommerce 3.5.8 installed, WordPress Popular Posts works.

I upgraded Woocommerce to 3.6.2. WordPress Popular Posts quit working.

I changed the theme from Storefront to Twenty Seventeen.

Wordpress Popular Posts still does not work.

I deactivated all plugins except Woocommerce and WordPress Popular Posts.

Wordpress Popular Posts still does not work.

    Now what?

Thank you for doing that test!

Since it used to work with WooCommerce 3.5.8 and now doesn’t work with 3.6.2, but only on your site, it is something that the developer of that plugin will need to have a look at for you.

I see from the thread you have open with them that they will troubleshoot this with you now, I’m going to mark this as resolved – if you have any further questions, you can start a new thread.

    This issue is still active.

As you asked me to start a new thread if this issue were to be revived, I have done so:
