Image and / or Title in Category Sidebar

Is there a way to add an image to the category listing?

Working on my 3rd WordPress blog (translation: still a newb) for a friend. He builds custom show cars and wants a link to each project on the sidebar. I’m attempting to keep it simple and just use the built in categories function to make adding new content easy. I want this to be easy enough that they can manage the content.

I’ve searched through the plug ins and found “Category Image” by Coffee 2 Code, but it is designed for web experts, and would require my help to maintain.

Suggestions to try?
