    Hi,
I just discovered the possibility to activate 2FA offered by wordfence
but it appears that it is only possible if you access the site through a smart phone that has an authenticator app. Is there any possibility to use 2FA without having to use a mobile phone with an app at all?
Infact I can’t even activate the feature. I installed and activated the Google authenticator plugin hoping that this would allow me to generate the authentication number but don’t see how…..
    Any help appreciated

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Hey @sinergyinaction,

Currently, this isn’t possible. The idea of app-based two-factor is that another device (phone or tablet capable of supporting a two-factor authentication app) is needed to complete the authentication making it more difficult for those trying to access your accounts to do so.

The plugin you’re using essentially does the same as the feature we’ve added. So, unfortunately, it isn’t going to be able to help you.

I can add a feature request for SMS and email options, but these really aren’t the preferred, secure methods of two-factor.

If you aren’t able to make use of two-factor as of now I would encourage you to make sure you’re using and Enforce strong passwords. You can find this feature in Wordfence > All Options > Enable brute force protection.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks,

    Gerroald

In fact it is possible to use the Desktop app from Authy when you have made an account using the app on a mobile device. After that enable Multiple Devices and from there you can enter the token using your app on pc. Download the desktop version from their website! They have also developed an extension to Goggle Chrome (which I haven′t tried yet). It works all fine for me, yet I think it is more safe to use a mobile app as mentioned by @wfgerald
