Installing new theme: permissions problem (I think)

    I’ve installed WP and upgraded to V2.8.3. All is well, except when I try to install a new theme (any one), the process commences then I get the following error message:
    Downloading install package from https://www.ads-software.com/extend/themes/download/carrington-blog.2.1.zip.

    Unpacking the package.

    Warning: ftp_mkdir() [function.ftp-mkdir]: Create directory operation failed. in /usr/share/wordpress/wp-admin/includes/class-wp-filesystem-ftpext.php on line 240

    Could not create directory /usr/share/wordpress/wp-content/upgrade
    The server is running Ubuntu 6.x (Dapper Drake) and I’m using my credentials when the theme install asks me for connection information. I have admin privileges, so I can’t figure out how come it cannot create the needed folder.
    By way of fuller information, the server is sitting on my internal network, not out there on the Web. I’m busy setting it up to host my web sites.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Sometimes, you might have to change folder permissions from 755 to 777 in some servers to enable the uploads from external sources and therefore not quite safe. Have you tried the good and true old-fashioned FTP upload instead? ??

    Hi,
    No, I must admit, I’ve not tried the FTP uplaod. It is an option, but I’d like to get to the bottom of this problem. my sites (4 of them, plus a couple of parked domains) presently sit with an ISP, but I’m migrating them away and will be hosting them on my own Linux box in future. I need to get everything set up in time for the migration at month end.
    I’ll change the folder permissions to 777 asa you suggest and see if that works.

    Please don’t forget to change folder permissions back to 755 after upgrading ??
