Copy/paste breaks on Microsoft Word comments

The problem is that Microsoft Word is a word processor, and WordPress is an HTML editor: https://www.ads-software.com/support/article/editing-files/#editors-to-avoid

They are essentially two different languages, and while WordPress will do its best to translate, a lot of Microsoft Word’s language is proprietary and there’s absolutely no way we’ll be able to translate, just like what you’ve found here.

If you really need to work with your site offline, your best bet is either the desktop app https://apps.wordpress.com/desktop/ or a plain text editor: https://www.ads-software.com/support/article/editing-files/#text-editors

Thanks for your quick reply, @macmanx. I would add to this report that the issue only applies to the Gutenberg editor, sites that have the Classic Editor plugin enabled are able to copy/paste commented-on text, in both the Visual and Text tabs.

If it’s definitely only an issue with Gutenberg, that Classic managed to overcome, then that would indeed be a regression, you’re right. You can report it as a bug over at https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues

However, I’d still caution that we cannot guarantee WordPress will be able to translate all of Microsoft Word’s proprietary formatting. We’ll always make a best guess when pasting, but it has never been a guarantee.
