Limit results to X amount of pages using [product] shortcode

I’m using the [products] shortcode for this page but can’t work out how I can make it so that the results are limited to showing for example 24 products over 3 pages – at the moment it’s showing all the results for the shop. I’ve tried using ‘limit’ but that only limits the results per page not the overall amount of results.

[products orderby=”date” order=”DESC” limit=”24″ paginate=”true” ]
