Menus/Posts/Pages/Categories Confusion-Nothing Working

  • Please help. My website is https://www.thewriteway.cc. I have set up the basic menu/user information and uploaded a nice theme. However, the menu system is confusing me and nothing seems to make sense. I’ve created categories, then pages to put posts on, and created a page to put blog entries onto…but then the pages still appear out of order when I check what is on the site. No matter how many times I try to make changes or look for edits, it seems impossible to put specific posts on specific pages and then put them in specific categories. How does anyone learn how to do this when nothing works?

    With links, I created categories for links and then typed in specific links to put under the categories, but they don’t show up on the home page, only individual links – so it’s as if I never created the categories.

    I downloaded a plug in to get a contact page, and was told the form would explain what to do. Nothing is there. Do I create a category for the contact page, then a page, then maybe a post?

    I’ve searched the www.ads-software.com website but can’t find a simple explanation of how these menus/categories work. Can anyone please help? The set up is easy but the menus make me just want to forget trying to learn WP completely since nothing I’m doing is working and nothing makes any sense. Please help. Thanks.

  • I’m not sure I’m following you properly, but I’ll give it a shot.

    First off, let’s start with the confusing posts & order. I’m wondering, did you mean for categories Copy&Content, News, Politics & Web to be sub-categories of Portfolio? If you make them parent categories instead, I think you’ll get them all grouped the way you like. You “home” blog page, ie. “Blog Posts” on you site, will always show a mixture of all categories (in descending date order) unless you customize it.

    As far as your links go, your template needs to have the proper code in it to support the link categories. You may want to switch to a newer/different template so that you can see how it should lay down.

    What plugin did you download for the contact page?

    Thanks for your help. I was just stressing out over the menus.

    I’d like to hear your opinion on my site now: thewriteway.cc
    I’m not sure if it works the way it should or not yet, but whatever progress was made had to be done without caffeine.

    I had a feeling there was something inherently wrong with the link categories not showing up no matter what was done. Maybe because I made the template/theme using Artisteer? I could look for a “links” plug-in, but let me know what you think if you have time to look at what was done.

    The Contact page was something called “7” but I don’t remember totally without checking.

    I took a plug-in for a portfolio image system that I’m going to try to figure out how to install and use today or tomorrow-hope it works ok.
